I was outside this evening tiring up tomatoes..which have grown at least a couple of feet in the past week when I realized after all these years growing tomatoes I still enjoy, anticipate and appreciate what marvelous plants they are. No other vegetable on this farm garners more attention then the tomatoes nor is there any other crop that can stir up more excitement when they begin flowing into the market and CSA baskets. Mark and I walk around the field every year about this time looking for signs that the tomatoes are getting ready to be picked. Even the chickens love a good ripe on the vine tomato and will gladly peck holes in everyone they see if you let the near the garden. Just the smell of tomatoes this evening while trying my best to tame these willy vines made my mouth water…summer is here on the farm and that means those heirloom tomatoes are on the way. …well in a couple of weeks anyway…
There are a couple of crops that are coming on strong right now and they are peppers, beans, squash and cucumbers along with our first digging of new potatoes. That’s right…this week new potatoes will be the star of the farm. Let me tell you…oh my goodness it is like eating butter…these babies are so good! So forget about picking up that bag of russets this week at the grocery store I think you will agree once you have tasted a freshly dug spud you will understand why I devote so much of our planting space to these gems. Now new freshly dug potatoes don’t require much in preparation. Just a little time in the steamer or gently roasted they will shine. Now of course a little hand churned sweet cream butter never hurts either:)
This Saturday I will be hosting our Pickling workshop in the farmhouse at 10:30am. You can order your workshop tickets on line from the farm’s website or when you sign in here at the farm Saturday morning. This is always a fun workshop and you will get to take home your own pickle creation. Admission is $8.00
CSA News & Updates:
This week is a weekly shareholder pickup only. We are still a bit shy on being able to accommodate the entire Weekly and Biweekly CSA during the same weekend yet. But the good news is we are quickly catching back up. I don’t want to confuse the already confusing for many pickup schedule.
We are planning July 3rd weekend as being able to facilitate a full CSA shareholder pickup. If you have any questions please email me for we are working in the field most days and away from the phone.
