This week we are kicking off our Community Supported Agriculture season or CSA for short. This is a program where shareholders sign up early in the year for a share of the farm’s produce. Our CSA is the backbone of the farm and nothing to me is more important then taking care of our CSA shareholders. These are the folks that invest in the farm before one seed is ever planted in the soil. They commit to riding out the season good, or bad with us all in hopes of course of it being a good growing season full of bountiful fresh food both for the eating and for the soul as well. Flowers, Herbs and fresh organic produce are the things that drive people to take that risk with us…but in truth being a CSA shareholder is much more then just a basket of fresh food and flowers it is about a connection to your local farm as in where your families food comes from and your local community. CSA shareholders have something in common with one another far beyond the foodie type mentality…they seek out and secure a place in the local food system like no other person in their surroundings. They dig down deep into the very basics of how and where their food is produced. They cut out the middle man and go for the direct but slow food movement and the joy of knowing they can bring the freshest, healthiest of food to their tables as well as seeing, feeling and touching the land in which it where it was born. It is an amazing ride we are embarking on….if you as a CSA shareholder take the time and the simple pleasure of breathing in and allowing yourself to acknowledge just how incredible this personal connection you have made truly is. As far as I am concerned you are our local heroes for you have made the choice whether you even realize or not to do three of the most important things you can do for your community and family and our mother earth.
1. You have secured a source for organically grown food for your family. It took time, research and an act of bravery to sign on to something you may have never tried before.
2. You just reduced the miles and days in which your food has traveled…by around 1000 miles… about 7 days fresher and several hundreds of gallons of crude oil. This country spends 30% of all fuel used to produce and transport food. You just took your name off a big part of that polluted non-sustainable food system.
3. The investment you made…you dollar spent joining the CSA…is a dollar that goes back into YOUR local community. Our CSA shareholders have secured a paycheck for people that come to work with us here on the farm that didn’t have one before and a skill for those that are here learning how to grow food naturally without poisoning our environment and ourselves in hopes are starting their own farm one day. You also have help to preserve the landscape of clean, green areas that we all in vision when we think about Tennessee. The family farm is the fastest disappearing landmarks of our country.
I bet you never realized what an impact your choice to become a CSA shareholder made when you hit that sign up now button on our farm’s website did you? Thank you from the bottom of our hearts…Mark, Peggy & Lucca Marchetti:)
