It's not time for this kind of heat….

We just held our CSA gathering this last weekend here at the farm and it was great getting to meet some of our new CSA shareholders and see our returning shareholders as well. One of the things I told our shareholders was they were about to take a ride on mother’s natures roller coaster. Well I really didn’t expect it to be this soon we would take the first dip in the amusement park…but here we are. The spring temps have taken a notion to speed into summer weather and with that our cool season crops are not happy about that. I also told our shareholders they would probably learn more about how their food is grown here on the farm then they would even care to know…ha ha…but we think that is just another part of what a CSA is all about…It’s not just a basket…it is also a relationship with your farm. 10339203_10203512740517515_6824829349657852425_o

A couple of things are happening right now on the farm…one of course is this heat…we are almost 20 degrees hotter than normal for this time of year. What that kind of heat does is tell the cool season plants like spinach, broccoli and lettuces…ect..that they need to hurry up and finish their lifecycle and set seed for next years crop. They want to bolt and put their energy into setting seed pods not producing edible crops. We don’t want that…

Next thing is when we had that heavy rain storm last week it beat some of these head lettuces pretty hard causing them to succumb and weaken when the heat set in. We have plenty of great looking lettuce heads so we are not too worried right now I just feel like we may feel this loss later this month.  But to end on a good note this warmer weather will help to kick in the squash and beans. There just may be a longer gap in between the changes in the season from spring into summer crops. photo 4 copy

Lets talk about how fast we have to make changes in our pickup schedule in the early season like this. I told y’all that we would do a back to back pickup at some point this month…. although this isn’t technically a back to back pickup I am calling for our CSA a littler earlier than our target date of the May 17th. I am asking y’all to pickup if you can during the week starting Monday the 12th. time for pickup 4-6pm for those that will pickup after work.  I will post this on our Facebook page for our shareholders to respond to me so I will know how many would like that Monday pickup.  We will also have a Wednesday pickup 2-6pm   and a Friday pickup 2-6pm.

They are calling for rain this weekend which we need so if I can get most of our shareholder pickups completed before the rain comes in that would be great. Remember your baskets please.
