FarmBox Pickup Saturday Nov 9th.

Hey there,

I have been waiting to send this newsletter trying to decide on what we going to harvest for this pickup. There is a lot ready out there right now and then there is broccoli’s and crops in the tunnel that are almost ready but not quite yet. The bad news is the weather forecast for early next week. Screen Shot 2019-11-07 at 9.05.48 AM

I know we will lose the field crops under the low tunnels for sure..they can only hold 2-4 degrees above the outside temps..and these are cold tolerant crops so they can take a few of nights at 30 degrees outside temp and not have to much damage when the rest of the field is iced over. But no way can the take low twenties and teens. The ground under the low tunnel will freeze and that will kill the plant. I only have some cabbages planted that still need a couple of weeks planned for harvest in the field low tunnels. I am almost certain we will lose these. I am going to harvest all the rest of the field crops for this pickup on Saturday..so this is a huge basket this weekend.

The high tunnel is a bit different. It will hold temps at night around 4 -6 degrees above the outside temps and using frost blankets as well on top of the plants may give us another degree or 2 protection. But I don’t have a lot of hope when I see a record breaking low temperature of 16..that is beyond what the high tunnel can protect. I just wanted to give our shareholders heads-up..this weekend could be the last pickup of the Fall CSA. I will let y’all know after next week if we are able to pickup in a couple of weeks for the last of those bigger crops like broccoli and cauliflower..they are just now heading up so they need another couple of weeks to be large enough to harvest.

But, for some good news.  One of my favorite crops are your baskets this week. Fresh fall carrots!! OMG..these are the sweetest carrots you will ever have.  I am really packing up some double CSA baskets this pickup incase it is our last..So there are lots of crops that can be frozen and preserved for the winter..with just a minute in boiling water and freezer bag. Also this pickup will include some lettuce mix..yes salads!! So excited for fresh organic lettuce.

Rest assured we will do everything we can to protect the last of the high tunnel crops through these next few cold nights. What a crazy fall..it was 90 on Oct. 6th.. and 33 will be high Nov. 12th. I will let ya’ll know the outcome of after these temps next week warm up.

Pickup Saturday Nov. 9th. 10:30-2pm.
